In saying farewell to Pastor Cathy,
we would like to show our love for her
in her new chapter of her life.
I pray that this letter finds you basking in the glow of a blessed Christmas season. As we turn into a new year, we all anticipate the unfolding of new horizons in our lives. One of those new horizons is that I will be stepping down as the pastor of United Evangelical Church. I have been offered a fulltime chaplain position at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. This ministry opportunity is where I believe I am being called to in this season.
Long term pastorates are extremely rare these days and so it has truly been a blessing to be the pastor of this church for over 20 years. It is hard to leave at this very exciting juncture in the life of the church. 2023 is the church’s 150th anniversary, new windows are about to be installed throughout the church, the steeple and bell tower will be getting a face lift in the spring, and the strategic planning task force will soon begin the implementation of our visioning study.
My last day with you will be Sunday February 19th, 2023. After worship on that day, all are invited to gather in the hall for a farewell luncheon and a time of good clean fun of roasting the pastor. My hope is that we will part ways with laughter in our ears and joy in our hearts for the years that God has blessed us with each other.
If you have not recently been active at the church, 2023 is the year that the church needs your presence, as well as your prayers. Come back, get active and help carry the church forward into its future. I believe that your next pastor is already praying about the church they will be called to serve. May it be that your prayers will meet with theirs.
In Spain, as Christians climb tough terrain on a pilgrimage to a Holy site, they encourage one another by shouting “Ultreya.” This means “onward and upward” in Spanish. As we begin our journey of venturing down different paths, let us hold before us the words of Paul’s 2nd letter to the Corinthians, chapter 4, verse 1. “Since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart.”
In Christ’s love,
Rev. Cathy
As Pastor Cathy departs from UEC to answer her next call in Chaplaincy at John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, we would like to show our love for her in her new chapter of life.
A farewell luncheon will be held on February 19th, 2023 following worship in the downstairs hall. A RSVP to the church office is required by February 10th, to attend, due to limited hall space.
All are invited to gather for lunch, a time of fun in roasting the Pastor and a farewell video crafted by the family of UEC. If you would like to send a video for the presentation, please send to robert.gundlach@comcast.net by February 5th, 2023.
You can send a video from your phone or computer in landscape form. If you are not tech savvy, Rob will be at the church Saturday, January 28th & February 4th from 12:30pm - 2:30pm to video anyone who would like to say a few words and be part of the farewell video.
Please take a moment to mark your calendars and save the date! For more information or to RSVP please click the blue button below. We are excited to have each of you with us for Rev. Cathy's time of farewell and look forward to seeing you there!
Sermon: "Salt, Light and the Realm of Heaven"
Focus Scripture: Matthew 5:13-20
"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything"... You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.
~Matthew 5:13a-15

Sermon: "Planting, Watering & Growing"
Focus Scripture: 1 Corinthians 3:1-9
"So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose... For we are God's servants, working together; you are God's field, God's building."

Focus Scripture: Matthew 17:1-9
"Jesus was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white... Suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved... When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid."

When Jesus proclaimed the good news of the gospel, did he not call for accountability and change from the hands of oppressors?
